- Leading the way in improving urban environments by planting trees that effectively reduce fine dust
- Creating a pleasant resting space for locals and a healthy environment for future generations
POSCO INTERNATIONAL (CEO Lee Kye-In) is leading efforts to improve urban environments for future generations by establishing its fifth ‘Fine-Dust Reduction Forest’ in Wonchang Park, Seo-gu, Incheon.
The fine dust reduction forest project is an urban forestry initiative that POSCO INTERNATIONAL has been promoting annually in collaboration with the Incheon Seo-gu Office and ChildFund Korea to reduce fine dust from the Yellow Sea.
The newly established fine dust reduction forest includes 1,542 trees, such as maple and zelkova trees, known for their excellent fine dust-reducing abilities, as well as species like sheargrass and big blue lilyturfs that can absorb and hold fine dust on their leaves and stems.
Research by the National Institute of Forest Science shows that urban forests have the potential to reduce average fine dust levels by 25.6% and ultrafine particle levels by 40.9%.
Additionally, the facilities for locals visiting the park have been expanded. Tables and chairs have been placed throughout the park, and swings for relaxation along with walking trails have been created, transforming it into an appealing park to revisit.
The company has built a total of five fine-dust reduction forests since creating the first one―Incheon Pori Park―in 2020, including Munjeom Park, Yongmeori Park, Kkaturyeom Park, and Wonchang Park. To date, a total of 6,653 trees, including large trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, have been planted.
In addition to the ‘Fine-Dust Reduction Forest Creation’ project, the company has been planting fine dust-reducing trees, such as Eastern white pines and magnolia trees, around schools and pathways through its ‘School Forest Build Project’ since 2019. Furthermore, since 2018, the company has been actively engaged in environmental improvement activities for the healthy development of future generations by providing approximately 500 air purifiers to elementary, middle, and high schools in the Incheon area through its ‘Clean Air in Schools’ project.
“We hope that the fine-dust reduction forest in Wonchang Park becomes a fresh relaxing space for local residents and a healthy environment for future generations,” Min Chang-Ki, head of the Energy Infrastructure Division at POSCO INTERNATIONAL remarked. “We will continue various activities to preserve the environment and foster sustainable growth alongside the local community.”
